Training Newborn to Sleep

If you are looking for a sleeping schedule for newborns, or are interested in sleep training for newborns, please read on. This article will explain why training a newborn to sleep is a hard task indeed.

During the newborn period, you may be feeling desperate to sleep, exhausted and overwhelmed. You may be looking for solutions and be willing to do anything to get your baby to sleep for just a few more hours so you can take a moment to collapse into your bed. The newborn period is all about survival.

The reasons why it is difficult to sleep train during this period are manifold. Firstly, newborns are born with incredibly tiny stomachs. This means that they need to eat every few hours and so cannot be asleep for more than a few hours. This, in addition to changes in feeding and sleep needs because of growth spurts, makes it impossible to set a daytime routine with your baby.

But parents, do not despair. There are a few things that you can do to help your newborn sleep that bit better:

Swaddle

The newborn startle reflex often causes babies to wake from sleep. Using a swaddle is a great way to reduce the impact of this on your baby's sleep - though bear in mind not all babies like to be swaddled. Each baby is different but in my experience swaddling can be a real help. Make sure to stop swaddling when your baby starts to roll.

Bedtime Routine

Even if this does not happen at the same time each day during the newborn period, due to inconsistencies in sleep, it is worth introducing a bedtime routine. A regular set of steps such as a bath, massage and story before bed will help your little one feel safe and secure. They will also quickly learn the order of the steps, and that the final step is night sleep!

Osteopath

If your baby seems uncomfortable on their back then you may wish to consider seeing an osteopath or reflux specialist. Reflux and digestive issues can be a key reason why a baby may seem uncomfortable on their back.
